Controversial Opinion: I don’t think you always need to hire an editor for your book. And certainly, not in every step of the publishing process. If you want to self-publish a book, then you probably know that one of the biggest expenses can be hiring a book editor. In the past, I’ve spent close to $2,000 editing one book. That’s a lot, and that’s not to say editors aren’t worth that much, they are! But as an author, it’s tough to fit that into your budget. Today we’re talking about when it may be appropriate to skip hiring an editor and some budget-friendly options for edits that don’t include using AI.
